Russian helicopter with 22 aboard missing in far east

A Russian helicopter carrying 22 people, including three crew members and 19 passengers, has gone missing in the remote Kamchatka Peninsula, the country’s emergencies ministry announced on Saturday.

The Mi-8T helicopter departed from a base near the Vachkazhets volcano, but failed to make a scheduled check-in at 04:00 GMT, according to the federal air transport agency, as reported by the Interfax news agency.

Search and rescue efforts are currently underway, but thick fog in the area is complicating the operation, the emergencies ministry said.
