Women activists call for increased sanctions on Taliban

A group of women activists, representing the Afghanistan Women’s Justice Movement, in a statement on Monday urged the international community to deny the Taliban any form of legitimacy and to impose further sanctions on the regime.

The group has also demanded an end to the Taliban’s “summary trials and secret prisons” and has called on countries to refrain from recognizing the Taliban as a legitimate government.

The women have asked for support to strengthen anti-Taliban protests and stressed that outcomes and decisions made at global meetings regarding the future of Afghan women should be taken seriously, with concrete actions to follow.

This appeal comes as several women’s protest movements have, in recent days, called for heightened international sanctions against the Taliban.
