Harris chooses Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as running mate

Vice President Kamala Harris has selected Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, aiming to bolster the Democratic ticket in Midwestern states, according to sources cited by the Associated Press.

Harris is set to introduce Walz at a rally Tuesday evening in Philadelphia, though a formal announcement has not yet been made. The decision brings to the forefront a former football coach whose rural roots, liberal policies, and pointed critiques of former President Donald J. Trump have recently gained attention.

Walz, 60, emerged from a pool of candidates with better name recognition and more politically advantageous states. However, his rise to the top of Ms. Harris’s list was propelled by cable news appearances where he described Republicans as “weird.” His straightforward criticism of Mr. Trump resonated with many voters, drawing attention to the plain-spoken Midwesterner.

Boarding his campaign plane Tuesday morning in Cincinnati for a tour of battleground states, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance did not respond to shouted questions about Harris’s selection of Walz as her running mate.

Vance was en route to Pennsylvania, where Harris plans to debut with her new running mate later in the day.
