Two individuals were flogged in Kabul on Monday on charges of having illicit relationship, according to the Taliban-run supreme court.
Each person received 39 lashes and was sentenced to one and a half years in prison, the court said.
The statement did not specify whether the floggings were carried out in public, nor did it provide details about the identities of the individuals involved.
This follows the Taliban’s December 2022 reintroduction of public floggings for both men and women, a practice reinstated after it took control of Afghanistan in August 2021.
According to findings by Amu, a research organization, the Taliban has carried out 37 orders of stoning and flogged at least 587 people, including 106 women, since their return to power. The data collected by Amu extends up to July 25.
