Trump officially nominated for president, chooses J.D. Vance as running mate at RNC

Milwaukee — Delegates at the 2024 Republican National Convention on Monday formally nominated Donald J. Trump for president and approved his selection of Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio as his running mate. The choice elevates a politician who once criticized Trump but has since become one of his most loyal defenders.

James David Vance, author of the bestselling memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” is expected to bolster turnout for Trump in the November 5 election. Vance, an Ohio native, enjoys significant popularity among the Republican base.

The announcement of Vance as Trump’s vice presidential pick was made on Trump’s Truth Social platform, coinciding with the start of the four-day convention in Milwaukee.

“After lengthy deliberation and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the great state of Ohio,” Trump stated. He highlighted Vance’s distinguished career, noting his service in the Marine Corps, his summa cum laude graduation from Ohio State University, and his Yale Law School credentials, where Vance served as editor of The Yale Law Journal and president of the Yale Law Veterans Association.

“J.D.’s book, ‘Hillbilly Elegy,’ became a major best seller and movie, championing the hardworking men and women of our country,” Trump continued. He praised Vance’s successful career in technology and finance and emphasized his commitment to American workers and farmers.

“As Vice President, J.D. will continue to fight for our Constitution, stand with our troops, and do everything he can to help me make America great again. Congratulations to Senator J.D. Vance, his wife, Usha, who also graduated from Yale Law School, and their three beautiful children. MAGA2024!”

The selection of Vance was met with approval by convention delegates and attendees, who expressed excitement about the party’s future under this leadership team.

The news of Vance’s nomination follows a weekend marked by heightened security concerns after an assassination attempt on Trump. Despite these challenges, the convention proceeded with delegates expressing optimism about the party’s direction and its potential to unite a broad coalition of voters.
