Afghanistan to face India in Super 8 stage at T20 World Cup

BARBADOS — Afghanistan is set to kick off the Super 8 stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup against India at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on Thursday.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board said the national team arrived in Barbados on Wednesday to prepare for the match.

Afghanistan demonstrated strong form early in the tournament, with wins over Uganda, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea in Group C. However, they faced a setback in their final group match, suffering a significant defeat against co-hosts West Indies by 104 runs.

Rohit Sharma’s squad secured victories over Ireland, Pakistan, and the United States in Group A, while their final match against Canada was called off due to rain.

During a training session in Barbados on Monday, India’s Suryakumar Yadav experienced an injury scare when he was struck on the hand. Despite the incident, Yadav completed practice and is expected to play in the upcoming match.

Afghanistan has a record of three wins and one loss in the tournament so far. Reflecting on their impressive performance against New Zealand, Suryakumar Yadav acknowledged the team’s preparations. “We do obviously have plans against Afghanistan, but we are completely focused on our strong points. We’re working on that. While we consider the opposition, it’s crucial to know and back our strengths,” he said.

As the competition intensifies, both teams aim to make a strong impact in the Super 8 stage, with India looking to leverage their undefeated streak and Afghanistan seeking to build on their earlier successes.
