MAIMANA, Afghanistan — An unexploded ordnance detonated in the Pashtun Kot district of Faryab province on Sunday, killing four children, according to Taliban officials.
Shamsuddin Mohammadi, the Taliban’s director of information and culture in Faryab, stated that the incident occurred in the village of Dahan Dara when the children were playing with the unexploded device.
“The four children, three boys and one girl, were between the ages of six and seven,” Mohammadi said. He explained that the children had found the ordnance in a water channel and it detonated when they struck it with a stone.
Unexploded ordnance left over from years of conflict continues to pose a deadly threat in Afghanistan, claiming the lives of dozens of children annually and injuring hundreds more.
