Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban foreign minister, discussed the upcoming Doha meeting with Tomas Niklasson, the EU special envoy for Afghanistan, according to a statement from the Taliban’s foreign ministry.
Niklasson indicated that “important issues” will be addressed at the Doha meeting and shared his observations with Muttaqi. The statement noted that Muttaqi stressed on the importance of participation of Taliban delegation in the Doha meeting.
The Taliban’s foreign ministry statement also noted that Muttaqi briefed Niklasson on his recent meeting with Rosemary DiCarlo, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs. Muttaqi stated that the Taliban would review the “manner” in which the Doha meeting is conducted. Muttaqi has once against emphasized on “meaningful participation” of the Taliban in the Doha meeting.
The discussion between Muttaqi and Niklasson comes in advance of the Doha meeting, which is set to bring together special envoys from various countries at the end of this month to discuss the situation in Afghanistan.
