Ali Bagheri appointed acting foreign minister of Iran

TEHRAN, Iran — The deputy foreign minister for political affairs, Ali Bagheri, has been appointed acting foreign minister of Iran, the Iranian foreign ministry announced.

The ministry said on X that Bagheri’s appointment was approved by an Iranian government delegation.

The 56-year-old senior diplomat steps in following the death of former Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian. Amir-Abdollahian died in a helicopter crash alongside Iran’s President Ebrahim Raeisi in the northwestern province of East Azarbaijan.

The helicopter crashed on Sunday in the Dizmar Forest, located between the cities of Varzaqan and Jolfa in East Azarbaijan Province.
