Bad weather hampers rescue efforts at Iran’s Raisi helicopter crash site

Bad weather complicated search and rescue efforts following a helicopter crash involving Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, state news agency IRNA reported on Sunday.

The helicopter carrying President Raisi and Foreign Minister Amirabdollahian crashed while crossing mountain terrain in heavy fog, an Iranian official told Reuters.

Iran’s top officials were returning from a visit to the border with Azerbaijan, according to the official. The lives of Raisi and Amirabdollahian were “at risk following the helicopter crash,” the official added.

Iranian television broadcast footage showing a large search and rescue team navigating the mountainous area on foot in heavy fog.
