MOSCOW — Russia expressed significant concern on Monday about the increasing tensions in the Middle East following Iran’s extensive drone and missile attack on Israel over the weekend.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, “We are extremely concerned about the escalation of tensions in the region. We call on all countries in the region to exercise restraint.”
Peskov emphasized the importance of resolving conflicts through peaceful means: “Further escalation is in no one’s interests. Therefore, we advocate that all disagreements be resolved exclusively by political and diplomatic methods.”
The attack by Iran was in retaliation for a suspected Israeli airstrike on April 1 that targeted Iran’s embassy compound in Syria, resulting in the deaths of top commanders from the Revolutionary Guards. This incident followed months of confrontations triggered by the ongoing war in Gaza involving Israel and Iran’s regional allies.
While Moscow has publicly refrained from criticizing its ally Iran over the strikes, it noted on Sunday that Tehran claimed the attack was an act of self-defense following Israel’s strike on the Iranian embassy, which Moscow had condemned.
