Haitian PM Ariel Henry to resign, announces transitional presidential council

Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who has not been elected, announced he will resign after a transition council and a temporary successor are appointed. Henry made the announcement on Monday, signaling a major shift in leadership since he took over after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021.

Under Henry’s leadership, armed gangs have significantly expanded their wealth, influence, and territory, leading to increased instability in the Caribbean nation. In an effort to address the security crisis, Henry traveled to Kenya in late February to seek support for a United Nations-backed security mission to assist Haitian police.

The situation worsened during Henry’s absence, with the conflict escalating dramatically. This turmoil left the 74-year-old neurosurgeon stranded in Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory, as regional leaders urged for a quick transition to restore order.

Henry called for peace in a video address, saying, “I’m asking all Haitians to remain calm and do everything they can for peace and stability to return as quickly as possible.”
