Mine blast on Iran-Iraq border kills Afghan migrant, injures four

A mine explosion along the Iran-Iraq border has resulted in the death of an Afghan migrant and injuries to four others, according to Ali Abbas Shafeie, the governor of Mehran, a western Iranian town. The incident occurred on Friday.

Shafeie reported that the group, attempting to enter Iraq illegally, triggered a mine approximately three kilometers inside Iraqi territory on Thursday night.

Following the explosion, Iranian authorities coordinated with Iraqi officials to send a demining team to clear a path for transferring the deceased and the injured to a hospital in Mehran.

Iran has hosted millions of Afghan migrants fleeing economic hardships in Afghanistan. Over the past decades, many have also utilized Iran as a transit point en route to Turkey and Europe, seeking better living conditions.
