Czech police cordoned off a university building in Prague on Friday following an unprecedented attack, marking the country’s deadliest mass shooting.
A 24-year-old Czech student is suspected of killing his father and then proceeding to his university in Prague on Thursday, where he fatally shot 14 people and wounded 25 before likely committing suicide, according to police.
The Czech government declared Dec. 23 a national day of mourning to honor the victims. The decision was made during a special cabinet meeting chaired by President Petr Pavel.
Police, who found a significant cache of weapons at the Charles University building in downtown Prague where the shooting occurred, had earlier received a tip that the suspect might be traveling to Prague from his hometown in the Kladno region, intending to end his life.
The shooter’s father was discovered dead shortly after the alert.
