Foreign ministers from the Group of Seven (G7) nations, following their meeting in Tokyo, in a joint statement on the Israel-Hamas conflict, urged temporary halts in hostilities to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance to the besieged Gaza Strip.
This marks only the second collective statement by the group of affluent nations concerning the crisis, which was ignited by an attack on southern Israel by gunmen from the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
The communique is expected to be released towards the conclusion of a two-day meeting in Tokyo. It is likely to reiterate the G7’s steadfast support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, despite the escalating situation in the Middle East.
In response to an attack by Hamas militants on southern Israel on October 7, Israel has conducted airstrikes on Gaza, resulting in a death toll of over 1,400 people.
According to health officials in the region, more than 10,000 people have lost their lives since the initiation of Israeli airstrikes, with approximately 40% of the casualties being children.
