The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) issued a statement on Friday, highlighting the recent apprehension of two women’s rights activists in Kabul and appealing to the Taliban to cease “arbitrary arrests and detentions.”
UNAMA expressed deep concern over the continued arrests and detentions of individuals exercising their rights to freedom of expression and opinion, emphasizing that such actions run counter to Afghanistan’s international human rights commitments.
The organization called upon the Taliban “to immediately halt arbitrary arrests and detentions, ensuring that those in custody have access to their families, legal representation, medical assistance, and a fair trial.”
Meanwhile, Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur for Afghanistan, took to social media on Friday to express his profound alarm regarding the detention of women’s rights defenders Zholia Parsi and Neda Parwani, along with their family members.
Bennett demanded the “immediate and unconditional release” of these activists and underscored the Taliban’s responsibility to ensure their safety and well-being.
Neda Parwani and Zholia Parsi were recently detained by the Taliban in separate incidents, along with some of their family members.
