Outgoing U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley, on Thursday, received a “clap out” as he left the Pentagon for the final time, ahead of his retirement.
Milley assumed the chairman role in October 2019 during Donald Trump’s presidency and is set to step down on Sept. 30. He served in Iraq, Afghanistan, and in other countries before becoming the Army’s top officer in August 2015.
Milley will be succeeded by U.S. Air Force chief General Charles Q. Brown.
Brown is a former fighter pilot who brings command experience in the Pacific to the position at a time of rising tension with China.
