Rescue work concluded and clean-up work started at the site of a deadly train derailment in Sindh on Sunday.
At least 30 people were killed and more than 80 were injured as a passenger train derailed in the southern Pakistani province on Sunday, roughly 275 km from the country’s largest city Karachi.
Mohammad Ishaq, Deputy Commissioner of the Sanghar District, confirmed the death toll and said the rescue works were completed after four hours.
“The rescue work was completed in four hours. Now we are carrying out removal work. In today’s incident, 30 people died and around 81 are injured,” Ishaq said.
“We were standing here. As soon as the accident happened, people started screaming. Everyone was running around in panic. People were totally distraught. Many were injured, and many had died. Local people carried out the rescue operation for almost an hour before the rescue services arrived. We transported people to local hospitals,” said Asif Mir, an eyewitness.
Accidents on Pakistan’s decaying rail system are common and successive governments have for years been trying to secure funds to upgrade the rail network as part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative for infrastructure projects.
