Musk says he eyes India investments after meeting Indian prime minister

Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk said he plans to make significant investments in India following talks on Tuesday with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Musk described Modi, in the US for a state visit to boost ties, as “open and supportive” of new companies in a way that “accrues to India’s advantage”, following a meeting by the two in New York.

“We are also hopefully looking to bring Starlink to India as well. You know, Starlink internet, which I think can be incredibly helpful for sort of remote or rural villages where they may have no access to the Internet or the Internet is very expensive and slow,” Musk said.

India has strong potential for a sustainable energy future including solar power, Musk said, adding that he hopes to bring SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service to India as well.

US companies need to reduce reliance on China as a manufacturing base in the face of tensions between Washington and Beijing. Tesla last year shelved its India entry plans due to high import tax structures.
