Work begins on 34-MW solar power project in Kabul

Afghanistan’s state-run power utility said on Thursday it had begun work on three electricity generation and transmission projects in Kabul, including a 34-megawatt solar power plant at the Kabul Green Industrial Park.

The projects also include a 126-megavolt-ampere substation and a 220-kilovolt transmission line at the same site, the Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) said.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Abdul Bari Omar, the Taliban-appointed chief executive of Breshna, said the projects were part of broader efforts to strengthen domestic energy production.

“Only in the past year, we have signed contracts for 1,250 megawatts of domestic power generation,” Omar said, adding that the projects had been implemented without foreign financial support or assistance.

He described domestic investment as essential for rebuilding the country and called for expanding such projects, saying the initiatives launched on Thursday would create direct employment for more than 500 people.

Afghanistan currently imports most of its electricity from neighbouring countries.

No details were provided on project financing or completion timelines.
