Afghanistan’s Salang Pass has reopened to passenger vehicles after being closed for a day due to heavy snowfall, the Taliban Ministry of Public Works said on Monday.

Mohammad Ashraf Haqshenas, Taliban spokesman for the ministry, said in a post on X that the pass is now open to traffic from both directions.

He added that snow clearance operations are continuing in the Salang area to allow the resumption of freight traffic as well.

The strategic Salang Pass, which links northern and central Afghanistan, was closed on Sunday morning due to heavy snowfall.

The reopening comes as large parts of western and northern Afghanistan have experienced snowfall and a drop in temperatures over the past two days.

Snowfall had earlier forced the temporary closure of several public roads in the western provinces of Herat and Badghis, officials said.
