Iran to host regional meeting on Afghanistan next week

Iran will host a regional meeting on Afghanistan next week with special envoys from neighbouring and regional countries, the Iranian foreign ministry said on Friday.

Foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said the meeting was the result of consultations with neighbouring states and other regional actors, adding that Tehran hoped the initiative would help strengthen cooperation and ease tensions.

The meeting will be held in Tehran and attended by special representatives on Afghanistan from Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, China and Russia, Baghaei said.

He said Iran attached “fundamental importance” to security and stability in its neighbourhood and would continue efforts to reduce regional tensions and promote understanding among countries.

The ministry has not mentioned Taliban’s presence in the meeting.

Iran announced the meeting after a recent rise in tensions between the Taliban and Pakistan. Taliban and Pakistan have faced heightened strains over the past two months.
