Staff at Afghanistan’s consulate in Bonn announced their collective resignation after Germany agreed to accredit Taliban representatives as diplomats, the mission’s acting head said.

Hamed Nangiali Kabiri, the acting consul general, said in a statement that “the leadership and all staff of the Consulate General of Afghanistan in Bonn, in reaction to this decision, announce their collective resignation.”

He added that all official documents, equipment and property of the consulate “which are entrusted by the people of Afghanistan” will be handed over to the German Foreign Ministry for safekeeping.

The move follows Berlin’s decision to accept two Taliban representatives as diplomats, one of whom is expected to be assigned to the Bonn consulate.

Kabiri said the decision was “unacceptable” and warned it put sensitive Afghan citizens’ records and information at risk.
