Taliban are constructing a “specialized military base” in the mountainous areas of Kandahar’s District 11 under direct orders from their leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada, two sources familiar with the matter told Amu on Monday.
The sources said the base is being developed in a remote, elevated location and is intended for strategic and security purposes. It is part of a broader effort by Akhundzada to consolidate his power base in Kandahar, sources said.
According to the sources, the facility will include accommodations for senior Taliban commanders and be equipped with specialized military hardware.
Earlier reports from Kandahar also indicated that the Taliban had begun constructing underground tunnels in the same mountainous region. The sources said both the base and the tunnels are being built out of public view and, in some instances, without the knowledge of Taliban police in the province.
Taliban have not issued an official response to the reports. However, the sources emphasized that the construction efforts appear to reflect Akhundzada’s recent push to strengthen his military influence amid internal divisions within the movement.
