Taliban sign MoU with Pakistan and Uzbekistan on Trans-Afghan railway project

Taliban announced on Thursday that their acting foreign minister witnessed the signing of a trilateral memorandum of understanding with Uzbekistan and Pakistan to conduct a feasibility study for the long-planned Trans-Afghan railway project.

The agreement was signed in Kabul by Taliban officials from the Ministry of Public Works alongside representatives from Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Transport and Pakistan’s Ministry of Railways.

Originally proposed in 2018, the Trans-Afghan railway would run from Termez in Uzbekistan through Mazar-i-Sharif and Kabul, before ending in Peshawar, Pakistan. If completed, the $7 billion railway could carry up to 20 million tons of cargo annually and form a critical trade corridor linking Central Asian markets to seaports.
