A former member of Afghanistan’s security forces was fatally shot by unidentified gunmen along the Khost–Gardez highway, local sources told Amu TV on Tuesday.
The victim, identified as Gul Waluddin, was killed in the village of Payinda Khel in Ismail Khel Mandozi district, Khost Province. The attack took place on Monday, sources said.
According to witnesses, Waluddin was approached by two men on a motorcycle, their faces concealed, and was shot at close range. He died at the scene.
Waluddin had previously served in Afghanistan’s Border Police under the former republic. Following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, he left the security sector and took up work on a poultry farm, earning about 4,000 Afghanis (roughly $50) per month to support his family, according to people familiar with his situation.
No group has claimed responsibility for the killing, and the Taliban have has not issued a statement on the incident.
The killing adds to a growing list of targeted attacks against former members of Afghanistan’s security forces, despite repeated Taliban pledges of a general amnesty following their return to power.
