Two former Afghan soldiers killed in separate incidents: Sources

Two former members of Afghanistan’s security forces were killed under unclear circumstances last week in separate incidents in the provinces of Kunar and Jawzjan, according to local sources.

In Kunar Province, unidentified assailants reportedly killed a former member of the special police forces on Friday night, July 11, in Nurgal District, local sources told Amu. The victim, identified only as Nusrat, died after a hand grenade was thrown near a market area.

Nusrat had been working at a local fuel depot since the fall of the former Afghan government in 2021. Sources said he had no known personal disputes or affiliations that might explain the attack. No group has claimed responsibility, and Taliban officials in the province have not commented.

In a separate case in Jawzjan Province, the body of another former soldier, identified as Ahmad Rowin, was discovered last Thursday, several days after he had been reported missing.

While some earlier reports described Rowin as a taxi driver, one local source told Amu that he had served as an officer in the former Afghan National Army and had turned to driving for work after the Taliban takeover.

According to the same source, Rowin was the son of a close associate of Abdul Rashid Dostum, the exiled leader of the National Islamic Movement of Afghanistan, a political faction that was once a dominant force in northern Afghanistan.

As of Sunday, July 13, Taliban officials had issued no statements regarding either incident.

The killings come amid ongoing concerns about the safety of former military and security personnel, many of whom have reported threats, harassment, and violence despite the Taliban’s repeated promises of amnesty following their return to power in August 2021.
