Three members of a family were shot and killed late Saturday night in the northeastern province of Badakhshan in what local sources described as a targeted attack by unidentified gunmen.

The incident took place in the village of Khairabad in Baharak district, according to residents who spoke with Amu TV. The victims included a man, his wife, and their son.

Sources familiar with the case said the gunmen entered the family’s home around midnight and opened fire following a brief altercation. The father and son were reportedly shot at close range. The woman was also killed during the attack, though the circumstances of her death remain unclear.

A local source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the family had recently sold a potato harvest, earning approximately 200,000 Afghanis (about $2,300). The attackers allegedly stole the money from beside the son’s bed before opening fire when the victims resisted.

Taliban have not publicly commented on the incident.

Targeted killings and unsolved violent crimes have surged across Afghanistan since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. Although the Taliban repeatedly claim to have ensured national security, it routinely attributes such attacks to “unknown armed individuals,” without providing further investigation details or accountability.
