GENEVA — The United Nations refugee agency has called on the international community — particularly Muslim-majority countries — to support Afghan refugees during the holy month of Ramadan by donating charitable funds, including zakat.
In a message posted on X, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said such donations could provide “food, warmth, and hope” to displaced Afghan families.
“Every day is a struggle for refugees and displaced families, and Ramadan makes their situation even more difficult,” the agency said. “Orphans, widows, and the elderly are deeply dependent on our compassion. Your financial support can help them afford a warm meal, clean water, a roof overhead, and more.”
The appeal comes as humanitarian conditions continue to worsen in Afghanistan, where millions remain in need of food assistance. Ahead of the Persian New Year, the World Food Program (WFP) warned that one-third of the Afghan population — approximately 17 million people — is facing acute food insecurity.
The WFP has launched a new global campaign urging donors to help fund food assistance for Afghan families during Ramadan. The organization said it requires greater international support to prevent the deepening of what remains one of the world’s most urgent humanitarian crises.
Despite efforts by aid agencies, the WFP noted that hunger continues to threaten millions in Afghanistan, compounded by economic collapse, widespread unemployment, and ongoing restrictions under Taliban rule.
