Taliban Internal Rift

Sources: Senior Taliban officials travel to Kandahar for talks with their leader

KABUL, Afghanistan — A group of senior Taliban officials has traveled to Kandahar for high-level talks with their reclusive leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada, to discuss pressing internal matters, sources told Amu on Tuesday.

A senior security official in Kandahar, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that key officials from the Taliban’s defense and interior ministries, along with representatives from other departments, arrived in the province under the leadership of Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Taliban’s deputy chief minister for economic affairs.

According to the source, the discussions may include recent internal tensions within the Taliban and the position of Sirajuddin Haqqani, the Taliban’s interior minister, whose recent remarks have signaled growing rifts within the movement.

Reports indicate that security measures in Kandahar have been significantly tightened over the past 10 days. Taliban forces have increased checkpoints and surveillance along all entry points to the province, underscoring the sensitivity of the ongoing discussions.

The visit comes at a time of mounting divisions within the Taliban leadership, with some senior figures expressing discontent over recent policies. The meeting in Kandahar could prove critical in shaping the Taliban’s internal power dynamics in the coming weeks.
