KABUL, Afghanistan — Japan on Tuesday announced an additional $27.5 million in humanitarian assistance to address the urgent needs of vulnerable Afghans.

According to the Japanese Embassy in Afghanistan, the funding will support humanitarian relief and basic human needs in Afghanistan, which has faced a deepening economic and humanitarian crisis since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021.

“We hope this assistance will make a difference in the lives of vulnerable Afghans in need,” the embassy said, noting that the aid will be delivered through partners, including United Nations agencies, international organizations, and Japanese non-governmental organizations.

With the new commitment, Japan’s total contribution to Afghanistan since August 2021 now exceeds $505 million, the statement said.

The announcement comes as Afghanistan grapples with rising poverty, food insecurity, and collapsing public services, leaving millions in need of urgent assistance. International organizations have repeatedly warned that humanitarian aid remains critical to preventing further suffering in the country.
