BADAKHSHAN, Afghanistan — A traffic accident on the Faizabad-Kishm highway in the northeastern province of Badakhshan left one person dead and three others injured, Taliban said in a statement.
The Taliban’s provincial police command said the incident occurred on Monday in the Qala Zafar area when a freight vehicle collided with a Toyota Corolla. The injured were taken to the central hospital in Badakhshan for treatment.
This marks the second major traffic accident in the province in the past week. A similar incident on the Faizabad-Baharak highway last Sunday claimed the lives of six people.
According to the police, the earlier accident happened when a passenger vehicle veered off the road and plunged into the Kokcha River, with all passengers drowning in the water.
Poor road infrastructure, failure to adhere to traffic laws, and the use of substandard vehicles are cited as major factors contributing to the recent surge in traffic accidents across the country.
