TASHKENT, Uzbekistan — Uzbekistan’s Foreign Minister, Bakhtiyor Saidov, announced on Tuesday that senior officials from the United Nations and deputy foreign ministers from Central Asian countries convened in Tashkent to discuss key regional issues, including cooperation with Afghanistan.
In a post on X, Mr. Saidov expressed his pleasure at hosting the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Central Asia, Kaha Imnadze, and the Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, Roza Otunbayeva, along with representatives from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan.
“Central Asia remains the top priority in Uzbekistan’s foreign policy,” Mr. Saidov wrote, emphasizing the focus on “deepening political dialogue, economic integration, environmental cooperation, transport connectivity, and people-to-people ties.”
Focus on Afghanistan
According to Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the agenda for the meeting included critical discussions on regional cooperation, with an emphasis on Afghanistan. Topics ranged from improving transport and trade connectivity to fostering economic partnerships and strengthening ties between nations and communities.
The talks highlighted the growing importance of coordinated efforts to address shared challenges in Central Asia, particularly in light of Afghanistan’s evolving political and economic landscape.
