Belgian foreign minister calls for global action to end violence against women

Belgium’s Foreign Minister, Hadja Lahbib, on Monday issued a strong statement urging global efforts to combat violence against women, describing it as a fight for fundamental human rights and a more equitable society.

“Fighting against this violence means defending fundamental rights and making our society fairer, safer, and more humane,” Lahbib said in a statement marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25.

Highlighting the grim reality of gender-based violence, Lahbib noted that every 10 minutes, a woman is killed by her partner or someone close to her.

A call for justice

Lahbib’s remarks underscore the urgency of addressing violence against women worldwide. Advocating for justice, she called for systemic changes to protect women and ensure accountability for perpetrators.

Violence against women remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations globally, affecting one in three women in their lifetime, according to UN data. This issue is exacerbated by cultural norms, systemic inequality, and insufficient legal protections in many parts of the world.

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women also launches the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign aimed at raising awareness and driving change. The campaign, which runs until December 10—Human Rights Day—coincides with preparations for the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action, a landmark roadmap for achieving gender equality.

Lahbib’s statement aligns with growing international calls for action to address gender-based violence and create a world where women can live free from fear and harm.
