KABUL, Afghanistan — Taliban publicly flogged a man in the eastern province of Paktika on charges of theft, administering 39 lashes, according to a statement from the Taliban’s Supreme Court.

The individual was also sentenced to six years in prison.

The incident is one of many recent cases of corporal punishment carried out under Taliban rule. Over the past four weeks, at least 80 people have been publicly flogged, including four individuals on Tuesday, October 29.

The escalating use of public corporal punishment by the Taliban has drawn international condemnation. Last month, the United Nations Human Rights Council passed a resolution urging the Taliban to immediately halt these punishments. Amnesty International has also raised serious concerns, pointing to the Taliban’s judicial practices as lacking due process and fair trial standards.
