KABUL, Afghanistan — The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Afghanistan reports a continual increase in the number of people requiring humanitarian aid, with an estimated 23 million Afghans now in need.

In a recent report, OCHA described a decade of relentless challenges in Afghanistan, which have left profound and enduring impacts on the population. Afghans are contending with ongoing conflict, political instability, severe drought, earthquakes, food insecurity, displacement, the COVID-19 pandemic, limited healthcare access, and chronic poverty, all of which have heightened the vulnerabilities of women and girls in particular.

“The past decade has been difficult for the people of Afghanistan,” the report stated, underscoring the toll of these compounded crises.

Since the Taliban’s return to power, poverty and hunger have worsened significantly, as Afghanistan faces escalating political, social, cultural, and economic crises that further strain the nation’s resilience.
