Germany asks Afghanistan’s ambassador and consul to step down, source says

Germany has asked Afghanistan’s ambassador in Berlin and its consul in Bonn to step down from their positions, according to a diplomatic source who spoke to Amu.

The source said the German government has made it clear that it will not allow the Taliban to send representatives to the country.

However, Germany has permitted technical staff at these diplomatic missions to continue working to provide consular services at Afghanistan’s embassy in Berlin and the consulate in Bonn.

This comes after the Taliban announced in early August that they recognize only five Afghan diplomatic missions in Europe as legitimate. These include embassies in Spain, Bulgaria, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic, as well as the consulate in Munich, Germany.

More than three years after the Taliban regained power, no country has recognized their regime. Many Afghan embassies, including the mission to the United Nations, continue to be operated by diplomats from the previous administration.
