KAZAN, Russia — Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday hailed the BRICS cooperation mechanism as a key force in promoting a more equitable, multipolar world and an inclusive global economic system.
In a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Kazan, Xi emphasized the importance of BRICS in fostering solidarity among emerging markets and developing nations. “The BRICS mechanism is the world’s most important platform for cooperation between emerging markets and developing countries,” Xi said, calling it “a pillar for realizing an equal and orderly multipolar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization.”
Xi’s visit to Kazan was at the invitation of Putin for the 16th BRICS Summit, which marks their third meeting this year. “It gives me great pleasure to attend this summit in the ancient Russian city of Kazan. Some 400 years ago, the Great Tea Road connected our countries through this very city, bringing tea from China’s Wuyi Mountains to Russian homes,” Xi said.
The Chinese leader also reflected on the deepening ties between China and Russia, noting that earlier this month marked the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Xi highlighted the progress made despite global challenges, emphasizing the importance of their partnership. “China and Russia have found a way to coexist as major powers, characterized by non-alliance, non-confrontation, and not targeting any third party,” he said.
Xi underscored the strategic coordination between Beijing and Moscow, which he said has contributed to the development and modernization of both countries and supported global fairness and justice. “Our cooperation has injected strong momentum into the development of our two nations and contributed significantly to the well-being of our people,” Xi said.
As the world undergoes what Xi described as “momentous transformations unseen in a century,” he expressed confidence in the enduring friendship between China and Russia. He also reaffirmed both countries’ sense of responsibility as major global powers.
The 16th BRICS Summit, which runs through Thursday, is the first to take place following the bloc’s expansion and will focus on enhancing cooperation among member states. Xi praised Russia’s leadership as this year’s BRICS Chair and expressed hope for productive discussions with Putin and other leaders. “I look forward to building consensus, sending a positive message of solidarity, and advancing strategic coordination and practical cooperation between BRICS nations,” Xi said.
The summit is expected to address various issues facing the Global South and aims to strengthen the bloc’s role in shaping a more inclusive global future.
