KABUL — Taliban publicly flogged a woman and a man in Logar Province on charges of having an “illicit relationship,” according to a statement from the Taliban-controlled Supreme Court.
The statement said the woman received 35 lashes and was sentenced to four months in prison, while the man was given 39 lashes and the same prison sentence.
The punishment was carried out in the Khwar district of Logar.
This latest incident is part of a broader wave of public punishments carried out by the Taliban in recent weeks. More than 60 people have been publicly flogged in various provinces over the past month, accused of a range of offenses.
The United Nations Human Rights Council recently condemned the Taliban’s use of corporal punishment in a resolution passed last week, calling for an immediate halt to such practices. Human rights organizations have also denounced the punishments, describing them as violations of fundamental human rights and contrary to global humanitarian values.
