Taliban publicly flog eight in Khost as corporal punishments continue

Taliban publicly flogged eight people on Thursday in Khost Province, bringing the total number of individuals lashed that day to 14. The Taliban-run Supreme Court stated that those flogged faced charges of “bribery, forgery, and fraud.”

According to the court, six individuals received 35 lashes each and were sentenced to one year in prison. Another individual was sentenced to two years and received 39 lashes, while one more was sentenced to one year and flogged 35 times.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court announced in separate statements that 10 people, including four women, had been publicly flogged in Kabul, Laghman, and Khost on various charges. Over the past two weeks, the Taliban have reportedly flogged more than 50 people.

The United Nations Human Rights Council recently passed a resolution condemning the Taliban’s use of corporal punishment, including stoning and execution by wall-burial, as violations of international human rights standards. The resolution expressed concern over reports of extrajudicial punishments, urging the Taliban to cease such practices.
