At least three policemen were killed on Monday when militants stormed a police headquarters in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, near the border with Afghanistan, according to a senior police official.

The attack targeted the Police Lines complex in Bannu District, which houses both police offices and a residential area for officers.

The assault, involving multiple assailants, including suicide bombers, was still ongoing as security forces attempted to neutralize the remaining attackers, the official said. Three attackers have been killed so far, the source added.

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation, reported that the assailants had been “pinned down” within the complex. Roads around the area have been closed as security forces respond.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, an Islamist militant group, claimed responsibility for the attack, according to a spokesperson for the group.

Bannu, located about 350 kilometers from Islamabad, sits near the volatile North Waziristan tribal region, a known hotspot for militant activity. Security measures have been heightened across Pakistan as Chinese Premier Li Qiang arrives in Islamabad for a regional leaders’ summit scheduled for this week.
