KABUL, Afghanistan — UNICEF has called for collective action to support girls’ rights, emphasizing the importance of amplifying their voices.

In a message shared on X to mark International Day of the Girl on October 11, UNICEF’s Afghanistan office highlighted the need to remove barriers that hold girls back from achieving their goals.

“Together, we can build a better future for all. We must invest in girls’ movements and support their voices to make this goal a reality,” UNICEF stated.

The United Nations General Assembly established International Day of the Girl in 2011 to recognize the rights of girls and the unique challenges they face worldwide.

UNICEF’s call for action comes amid troubling statistics from Afghanistan, where 1.5 million girls are currently barred from attending school. Since the Taliban regained control of the country, girls above grade six have been prohibited from attending classes, further restricting their access to education.
