The U.S. mission for Afghanistan marked World Teacher’s Day by commending the dedication of Afghan teachers, describing their commitment to providing education as an “inspiration” that continues to guide the nation’s youth.

Despite the Taliban’s restrictive policies, including the prohibition of World Teacher’s Day celebrations and the ban on girls’ education beyond grade six, Afghan educators persist in their efforts.

“On World Teacher’s Day, we honor the incredible educators in Afghanistan who continue to inspire and uplift Afghan girls and boys despite the challenges,” the U.S. mission noted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

This year’s World Teacher’s Day theme, set by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), focuses on “Valuing Teacher Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education.” The theme highlights the need to amplify teachers’ voices and address their challenges while recognizing the expertise they bring to shaping education systems.

The tribute comes as Afghan teachers face unprecedented difficulties under the Taliban’s rule, particularly women educators who are now restricted from teaching older girls. However, the U.S. message emphasizes the crucial role Afghan teachers continue to play in fostering hope and resilience in the country’s youth.
