Religious scholar Abdul Qadir Qanit released from Taliban custody, sources report

Two informed sources have confirmed to Amu that Abdul Qadir Qanit, a religious scholar and former head of the Council for the Protection of Religious and Jihadi Values, was released from Taliban detention on Tuesday, October 1.

The sources also reported that Mawlawi Abdul Samim Ghaznavi, another religious scholar who had been arrested alongside Qanit, was freed on the same day.

Qanit had been detained earlier this week by Taliban intelligence forces in Kabul.

The Taliban have not provided any explanation for Qanit’s arrest.

In recent months, Qanit had appeared on various media outlets as a religious affairs expert, openly criticizing the Taliban’s restrictions on girls’ and women’s education.

This comes amid a wave of arrests by the Taliban over the past week, with at least five individuals, including two political analysts, two religious scholars, and a former member of parliament, being detained.
