Traffic accident in Iran kills 11 Afghan nationals

A collision between a pickup truck carrying Afghan migrants and a trailer truck in the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan has resulted in the deaths of 11 Afghan nationals, Iranian media reported on Tuesday.

The Sistan and Baluchestan Red Crescent announced that the accident occurred early Tuesday on the Saravan to Kuhak road.

Fourteen others were injured in the crash, according to officials.

Speaking to Iran’s ISNA news agency, Morteza Sajadi, director of the Red Crescent in Sistan and Baluchestan, said the accident took place at 1:10 a.m. local time. “A report was received about a collision between a trailer and a pickup truck carrying 23 passengers, mostly Afghan nationals, at kilometer 65 on the Saravan-Kuhak road,” Sajadi said.

Sajadi added that 12 people in the pickup truck, along with two passengers in the trailer, were treated for injuries on-site by Red Crescent personnel. Among the injured were both drivers involved in the crash.

According to Iranian media, the victims were Afghan citizens who had entered Iran illegally. The region, which borders Afghanistan and Pakistan, is a frequent route for migrants attempting to cross into Iran.
