Kazakhstan accredits Taliban-appointed envoy as charge d’affaires

ASTANA, Kazakhstan — Kazakhstan on Wednesday accredited Mohammad Rahman Rahmani, the Taliban’s appointee, as the chargé d’affaires of Afghanistan’s embassy in Astana, the Kazakh Foreign Ministry announced.

Deputy Foreign Minister Alibek Bakayev met with Rahmani and confirmed his acceptance as the Taliban charge d’affaires.

According to a statement from the ministry, Bakayev emphasized that the decision to recognize Rahmani was aimed at fostering stronger trade, economic, and humanitarian ties between Kazakhstan and Taliban-governed Afghanistan.

“The active participation of Afghanistan in regional relations will provide additional opportunities for economic recovery and social stability by improving the lives of the Afghan people and maintaining peace and security in the region,” Bakayev stated.

This comes as the United Arab Emirates also accepted the credentials of Badruddin Maulana, the Taliban ambassador to the UAE on Wednesday, August 21.

The UAE is now the second country, following China, to formally recognize a Taliban-appointed ambassador.
