Iran asks Talian to disclose resluts of probe into 1998 attack

Iran’s Foreign Ministry in a statement on Wednesday on the 26th anniversary of the 1998 attack on its consulate in Mazar-i-Sharif City in Balkh called on the Taliban to disclose the results of their investigation into the incident.

The ministry said it is investigating the dimensions of the “terrorist attack” that left eight Iranian diplomats and a journalist dead. The attack happened during the first rule of the Taliban in Afghanistan in late 1990s.

The assault on the Iranian consulate occurred in 1998, during the Taliban’s initial period of rule when they took control of the province.

In the statement, Iran’s Foreign Ministry called on Taliban to disclose the results of their investigations into the perpetrators of the attack.

Taliban has yet to take responsibility for the attack or comment on those responsible.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry identified the victims as Nasser Rigi, Noorullah Noorzi, Karim Heydarian, Rashid Pariyao Fallah, Heydar Ali Bagheri, Mohammad Ali Qiasi, Majid Nouri Niyarki, Mohammad Nasser Naseri, and Mahmoud Saremi.

Following the attack, the United Nations Security Council, in its Resolution 1267, described the incident as a “flagrant violation” of international laws.
