Abdul Kabir, the deputy prime minister of the Taliban, traveled to Iran on Monday, despite being on the United Nations sanctions list for his involvement in a 2007 attack in Baghlan province that killed 72 people, including Sayed Mustafa Kazemi and other members of Parliament.
Hamidullah Fetrat, the deputy spokesperson for the Taliban, stated that the visit was made at the “official invitation” of Iran. Kabir is expected to attend the inauguration ceremony of Iran’s president.
The visit comes amid rising tensions, with many Afghan migrants in Iran facing harassment from Iranian police and citizens after an Iranian national was killed in Tehran’s 15th district last week.
Fetrat also mentioned that discussions regarding the issues faced by Afghan migrants in Iran would be on the agenda during Kabir’s visit.
Previously, several Taliban officials on the U.N. sanctions list, including Sirajuddin Haqqani, have traveled abroad.
