KABUL, Afghanistan — The Taliban-run supreme court announced on Saturday that two people were flogged in public in Kapisa province.
The court’s statement noted that the individuals were lashed 18 times on charges of “having inappropriate relations.” The punishment was carried out in the Hesa-e Awal district of Kapisa, the statement said.
This incident follows the public flogging of 63 people, including 14 women, in a single day last week in the province of Sar-e Pul. The corporal punishments administered by the Taliban have sparked reactions from human rights defenders, including the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).
“UNAMA reiterates its condemnation of corporal punishment and calls for respect for international human rights obligations,” the mission stated in response.
