Claudia Sheinbaum wins Mexican presidential election: Electoral institute

MEXICO CITY — Claudia Sheinbaum, the ruling party candidate, has won Mexico’s presidential election, according to a rapid sample count released Sunday night by the INE electoral institute.

The INE’s rapid count estimates the election results based on a representative sample of votes from across the country, with a margin of error of +/-1.5%.

Sheinbaum’s victory marks a significant milestone for Mexico, a country with a deeply rooted macho culture. She will be the first woman elected president in the nation’s history.

The president-elect is scheduled to begin her six-year term on October 1.
